When an actor of a show (Kenan Stewart) describes the performance as a classic comedy with modern style, one can’t help but to be curious. “It’s funny and fast-paced. There’s a joke for everybody,” Stewart explains. He quickly adds, “No, there’s 20 jokes for everybody.”
Center Stage Theatre (CST) will be performing Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor February 17th and 18th at 7:30PM and February 19th at 3:00PM at the Goldsboro Paramount Theatre (139 S. Center St.). It is a quick-witted and outrageous comedy about mistaken identity, love, family relations, and much more.

It is a small cast, with only eight actors, but it has big potential to be a Goldsboro favorite! Matt Gore, Max, explains that Lend Me a Tenor is comparable to the humor of modern favorites like The Producers. Director Keith Parrish adds that mistaken identity has always been a popular theme in comedies, dating back to Shakespeare’s own comedies.
The last time CST did Lend Me a Tenor was in 1995 at the Herman Park Center. Gene and Debbie McLendon were in the 1995 production with the same exact roles that they currently have (as Saunders and Maria, respectively). “Back then, they had to put a lot of makeup on me to make me look older. Now, I’m actually the age that my part is supposed to be!” Gene McLendon says, laughing. (Below: Debbie and Gene McLendon in the 1995 production of Lend Me a Tenor.)
“It really is a hilarious show,” Cindy Roy, Diana, admits. “But I have to say that it is rather PG-13. There are many adult references and vocabulary in this show, so I definitely don’t recommend bringing kids.” When asked how her experience has been so far, she claims that this has been one of her favorite roles that she has ever had the opportunity to portray.
The cast includes: Matt Gore (Max), Sequilla Arita (Maggie), Gene McLendon (Saunders), Doc Heidicker (Tito Merelli), Debbie McLendon (Maria Merelli), Kenan Stewart (Bellhop), Cindy Roy (Diana), and Julie Ham (Julia).
The production team includes: Keith Parrish (Director), Cathy Woods (Assistant Director), Karen Parrish (Producer), Venessa Therrien (Stage Manager), and Tamara Baltazar (Assistant Stage Manager).
